Five Things To Expect At Your Child’s First Dental Appointment
Posted on November 27th, 2024
As parents, you must ensure you help your child establish healthy oral habits. One of the key steps in helping them commit to a healthy oral journey is scheduling their first dental appointment. Doctors Kenny and Sarrah Zamora at Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, recommend that you bring in your child for their first dental appointment within six months of their first tooth erupting or by 12 months at the latest. To help prepare you for what lies ahead, here are five things to expect during your child’s first dental visit:
Paperwork and Medical History:
During your child’s first dental visit, you will need to fill out paperwork, including a medical history form, so that your dentist can customize treatment based on your child’s unique needs.
The dentist will perform a comprehensive oral examination and even perform an X-ray if necessary, to check your child’s teeth, gums, bite, and jaw development for any early signs of tooth decay, gum problems, or bite issues.
The dental hygienist will gently clean your child’s teeth using a small, soft brush to remove plaque and any food particles stuck in hard-to-reach areas. Additionally, your child will receive oral hygiene instructions from the dental team.
Developmental Assessment:
As part of your child’s dental evaluation, your dentist will discuss any concerns, such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, or prolonged pacifier use, and how to manage them.
Your child’s first dental appointment, not only promotes oral health but also helps establish a foundation for a lifetime of good dental habits. At Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, we offer a welcoming and positive atmosphere so your child can have a successful and comfortable experience.
