Teething Tablets: A Risky Remedy for Your Baby’s Discomfort
Posted on July 13th, 2024
At Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, we understand that as parents, you want the best for your children, especially when they are in pain. The teething stage is a significant milestone in your child’s development, but it can also be a rather uncomfortable experience. As a result, some parents turn to teething tablets as a solution.
Teething tablets are small, dissolvable tablets that contain natural ingredients like chamomilla, and coffea cruda. They are a homeopathic treatment marketed as a solution for teething pain and discomfort in babies. These tablets are meant to be placed under the baby’s tongue, where they dissolve quickly and provide immediate relief from teething pain.
But… these tablets might not be the best option for your child, and here’s why:
Teething tablets can contain harmful ingredients, such as belladonna, which can cause side effects like seizures, difficulty breathing, and even death in babies.
These tablets are not regulated by the FDA, meaning their safety and effectiveness have not been thoroughly studied, and the dosage and potency may vary from one brand to another.
The inconsistent potency of teething tablets can lead to unpredictable effects and might cause a risk of overdose.
Moreover, teething tablets can pose a choking hazard for babies due to their small size and rapid dissolvability.
Fortunately, there are alternative and safer solutions for teething pain that do not pose any significant safety risks.
Best Solutions for Teething Pain
Cold Therapy: Cold therapy can be effective in easing teething pain. You can give your baby a cold washcloth, chilled teething rings, or even a cold spoon to chew on.
Massage: Gently massaging your baby’s gums with a clean finger can relieve teething pain.
Over-the-counter Medications: Acetaminophen and ibuprofen can be effective in easing teething pain. However, it is important to consult with your pediatricians, Drs. Kenny and Sarrah Zamora, before giving your baby any medication.
Distraction: Distracting your baby with toys or games can also effectively ease teething pain.
