The ABCs of Children’s Toothpaste Selection
Posted on February 13th, 2025
Most parents know picking the right toothpaste for their child is a crucial step in promoting optimal oral health. By selecting toothpaste your children enjoy, you can make brushing their teeth a fun experience they will look forward to. At Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, our pediatric dentists, Drs. Kenny and Sarrah Zamora, share helpful tips that you can use when choosing the right toothpaste for your child so you can set the stage for healthy oral habits and a lifetime of beautiful smiles.
Consider the following factors:
Age-Appropriate
Use toothpaste specifically designed for your child’s age group. Choose fluoride-free toothpaste for younger children until they can spit it out.
Fluoride Content
When choosing a toothpaste for your older children, check that it contains fluoride, as it strengthens enamel and prevents cavities.
Flavor Preferences
Children’s toothpaste comes in various flavors. Pick the one your child likes to help make brushing an enjoyable experience for them. When your child is fussy, and you aren’t sure what flavor they will like, try different flavors until they find one they will enjoy.
Bonus Tip
Supervise your children when they brush their teeth until you are sure they can do it correctly on their own. Use only a smear of toothpaste for children under three years old, and for those above three, a pea-sized amount is sufficient. When your child finishes brushing, encourage them to spit out the toothpaste, but avoid rinsing with water immediately to allow fluoride to remain on their teeth.
With creativity and consistency, you can make brushing time fun and ensure your child maintains their sparkling bright smile for years to come. Remember, regular dental checkups with our pediatric dentists, Drs. Kenny and Sarrah Zamora, are also essential for their ongoing oral health journey.
