Three Sedation Options in Pediatric Dentistry
Posted on August 13th, 2025
At Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, we understand that children can experience dental anxiety, which can be a major setback in their oral health journey. That is why we are committed to ensuring your child’s dental visit is always a positive experience. We offer sedation options to ensure your child remains calm and confident throughout their dental visit. Here are three types of sedation options we offer:
Local Anesthesia
Used for minor dental procedures, local anesthesia involves numbing specific areas of the mouth where the dental procedure will be performed by applying a topical numbing gel followed by the injection of a local anesthetic solution. This reduces the amount of discomfort your child can feel while remaining awake and responsive.
This is commonly known as laughing gas and is a safe and effective option for reducing anxiety and helping children relax during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask placed over the child’s nose, allowing them to breathe in a combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen. The effects are mild and wear off quickly once the mask is removed.
General Anesthesia
It involves rendering the child completely unconscious, similar to undergoing surgery in a hospital setting. It is administered by a licensed anesthesiologist and is normally reserved for complex dental procedures, extensive treatments, or cases where a child cannot cooperate.
At Bayside Kids Dental in Odenton, we prioritize your child’s comfort and safety. Schedule an appointment, and we will be glad to answer any questions you have. We’re here to help your child have a positive dental experience.
